For the psychiatric treatment of patients with dementia, the control and amelioration of psychiatric symptoms, especially behavioral symptoms, are becoming more important than ever. The authors tried to evaluate the clinical efficacy of indeloxazine hydrochloride, a new cerebral metabolic enhancer, which is known to be effective especially on the psychiatric symptoms in the patients with .dementia. Subjects consisted of 15 patients with dementia, and Indeloxazine hydrochloride tablets were administered 3 times a day(60mg in a day) for 3 months. The symptoms were assessed according to the items shown in appendix 1 at the following times : before medication, at 1 month and 3 months after treatment.
The results were as follows ;

of spontaneity, disorientation, poor personal relations, memory disturbance, dyscalculia and other psychiatric symptoms except above mentioned 14 psychiatric symptoms, subjective symptoms, neurological symptoms, disturbance of activity of daily life were shown in only one thus thirds of subjects.
2. The clinical efficacy rate of the drug for those who mainly showed 14 psychiatric symptoms was 26% at 1 month and 58% at 3 months, and maximal efficacy rate was shown in reduction of responses as 73%.
These results revealed that indeloxazine hydrochloride had a high clinical efficacy for the treatment of the patient with dementia, especially on the psychiatric symptoms including behavioral, emotional and intellectual disturbance.
For further evaluation of the efficacy and safety in long-term treatment, double blind controlled study should be required for the larger number of subjects.
